National Day

Swedish Flag Today, the 6th Of June, is the National Day of Sweden, and for the first time its actually a holiday. As we’ve been independent since 1523 it’s not cerebrated with the same intensify as that of younger nations. Such as Norway or the US.
Guess that’s not necessarily a bad thing, shows that we’ve found our place in the world and that we are comfortable with it.
However a bit of pride and nationalism wouldn’t hurt. Unfortunately those concepts has been hijacked by the extremists, using it as an excuse to promote their agenda, which is quite sad.
Hopefully making the national day a holiday will promote peaceful and sensible celebration and make national pride something to be prod of.

People are still sceptical, however, and the day has hardly been celebrated at all.

I’m skeptical. Why do we even celebrate this on June 6th?

  2. Emil Says:

On June 6th, 1523 Gustav Vasa was elected King of Sweden, thus ending the Kalmar union and on top of that on the 6th of June, 1809 we got a new constitution that transfered the power form the king to the riksdag.

  3. Erik Arvidsson Says:

Nah. I don’t buy it. The dates were manufactured to fit with June 6th ;-)

  4. Emil Says:

    Haha, everything is a conspiracy?

compare our so called celebration of a new constituation, to others, france for example, who i believecelebrate the revolution or something.
Think about that for a second… how cool is a new constitution?

(this textbox has a weird width…it goes way beyond, and behind the right orange/beige column with…right now! i cant see what im typing…)
